Mission Date:
09 July 09

Mission page was sent out 9 July 09 due to airborne reports of 121.5 signal west of Livermore Airport (KLVK). Responding were Capt Gary Cinnamon, CA-001, and Lt Doug Holland, CA-151 SQ14 ES officer, in N718CP. IC Steve Renwick was able to obtain 5 UDF searchers, all but 1 in trainee status and 1 standard who had not been on search in a while. IC requested air crew accompany UDF team on ground search, and provide Little L-Per for equipment. Ground team split into 2 teams of 3 each, searching for signal and getting triangulation. Several suspect places (Sport Chalet, Boat master, self storage units )were ruled out. Aircrew had targeted area to be NW quadrant of intersection of I580 and I680, in Dublin. Finding high ground and taking several bearings, led us to search residential area in suspect quadrant. Moving downhill in direction of signal bearing, and stopping every couple blocks to see if signal still in front, we finally located beacon in a residence on Hillrose Drive in Dublin. Resident had recently moved box in which unit had been stored for several years . The movement of the box or something in the box fell onto the unit pushing trigger into activate position. Battery was removed for owner and he was directed to dispose of it. Information from ELT unit was relayed to IC Renwick. Upon takeoff from Livermore to RTB to SAC, IC Renwick called to verify unit silenced, because NORCAL was reporting signals still being heard by passing aircraft. We were direct to search area near SUNOL intersection and LOCKE intersection near Tracy, with negative results. IC then directed us to search south of SUNOL intersection, where we picked up another signal. This was located and reported to be between San Jose International airport and Highway 101 to the East. Aircrew then returned home, while IC was trying to dispatch another UDF team to the area to locate latest beacon. Aircrew finally arrived at KSAC about 2130 hours, 11 1/2 hours after departure. Check your email to learn final results of 2nd search, not available at this time.

INTERAGENCY EFFORT IN CALIFORNIA MOUNTAIN SEARCH LOCATES AIRCRAFT

For further information contact 1LT. Matthew Scherzi

Merced, California-The Civil Air Patrol has ended its participation in the search for an overdue aircraft in the Sierra Mountains in California. Wreckage was spotted in Mono County by a USAF Pavehawk rescue helicopter from Nellis AFB and verified as the aircraft that was the subject of the large-scale search. There were no survivors. The family has been notified.

The couple was reported overdue Friday evening, the 24th of April when they failed to arrive in Modesto, California on a flight from Tonopah, Nevada. The Civil Air Patrol was activated by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and a full scale search was initiated early Saturday morning.

Over the next week over 200 Civil Air Patrol members from throughout California as well as Nevada flew over 150 missions in support of the search over some of the most dangerous terrain in the United States. They were joined by helicopters from the California National Guard at Moffett Federal Airfield and personnel and aircraft from the 58th and 66th Rescue Squadrons at Nellis AFB.

Flight crews braved high winds, treacherous terrain and altitudes as high as 17,500 feet altitude during the last week. High altitude flight requiring the use of oxygen provided additional operational and logistical challenges.

Mono County Sheriff’s Office was involved from the start, as was the California Emergency Management Agency (CALEMA). The Sheriff’s Office provided much local knowledge, as well as the use of their Search and Rescue Command Post and deputies. CALEMA was instrumental in marshalling local and state assets for this search.

Incident Commander 1LT. Tolga Tarhan said, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families at this difficult time.”

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 55,600 members nationwide. CAP performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and was credited by the AFRCC with saving 91 lives in fiscal year 2008. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counter-drug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the nearly 22,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs. CAP has been performing missions for America for more than 67 years. For more information on CAP, visit gocivilairpatrol.com.

Air Force Association

I recently just found out that the Air Force Association gives out two different types of grants specifically to Civil Air Patrol. The first is just a regular CAP grant while the second pertains to Aerospace Education. It would be great if we could apply for these grants so the unithas access to more money.

Here is the website for more information: http://www.afa.org/aef/aid/grants.asp
